A long needed feature has finally arrived!

The Panasonic DVX-100 came along a number of years ago and made the “24p
/ filmlook” video shooting almost a standard. The technolgy was ingenious in that a telecine-style pulldown happened in camera so you pulled out a 29.97 NTSC mini-dv tape that could be played in any mini-dv player. The camera had cine-style gamma settings that produed a very nice film-style image. And for that reason it became in instant camera classic. Panasonic recently released the 3rd generation of the camera, the DVX-100B. This new version brings shooters (and most importantly editors) a long wished for function in the ability to sync timecode over firewire. Higher end cameras have had the ability to sync timecode for years via timecode in and out but this is the first camera that I am aware of that will allow that sync by the firewire standard. This is a great feature that I don’t think many people are aware of yet. A client tried to rent several of them for a multicam shoot recently but they were unable to locate enough of them. This might be that there are still plenty of originals and Rev. A’s in circulation that rental houses haven’t stocked up on the Rev. B yet but hopefully they will soon. It seems Panasonic also allows the swapping of scene files and camera settings via firewire too. Now all we need is a wireless way to get this information from camera to camera and the multicam shoot just got easier and better!

You are correct in that it has been out for a little while. The rollout might have been a slower than the last revision as a local rental house only got one in recently and we were unable to find several other for rent at the same time for a multicam shoot using the timecode over firewire feature. My experience has been that most people don’t know that you can now send the timecode over firewire so that’s why I wanted to post about it as it is a great idea. I’ll revise a bit.
