A very clever idea

The Independent Film Channel has a nice site called IFC Media Labs. It is another site that asks you to upload video. But at IFC they are more concerned about artistic expression than farting into a lighter or lip-syncing badly. You upload your short film, get it rated and IFC might air it in the monthly show on the IFC cable channel. I Tivo this regularly and this month one really caught my eye. It is one of those clever ideas that makes you wonder why you didn’t think of it first. A guy named Jake Powell has made a music video called Everything. The IFC show said that it was made using digital stills. It looks to be lots and lots of well timed shots of the subject, in midair, in mid-jump, just a bit above the ground. Capture enough of those stills and edit them together and you have something fun! The text treatments that pop up later are kind of throwaway and sure it’s not the first time we’ve seen static images edited together in an otherworldly fashion… but Powell’s levitating subject is really unique. And fun.

  1. Comment by Jonathan:

If you like that particular effect you might like to look a little further back to the films of Norman McLarenNeighbours (1952) is perhaps the most famous example of his work.

  2. Comment by J. Curtis:

I haven’t seen Neighbors in years but that’s the first thing I always think of when i see this effect. I think the rock band Extreme did something similar in one of thier music videos.
