I don’t think it’s coincidence at all. Jim Jannard does the industrial design for the RED Digital Cinema project and he’s a fuel car enthusiast from way back. All the RED designs to date have had fuel car component roots. A friend of mine pointed out the exact carburetor that the NAB-era design for RED was based on.
Expect more of the same, besides, it looks like RED is going to have race-car level performance for a camera!
