For Scorsese, X marks the spot

The Miami Herald movie critic, Rene Rodriguez, has posted a fun little column on his blog. He has taken his DVD of Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (I’m guessing he’s an Academy voter… or a bootlegger?) and grabbed still frames of a number of repetitive visual X’s that the director put throughout the movie. Rodriguez sees these X’s as “a symbol of impending doom.” It’s always fun to go back and watch a film like The Departed again and look for things like this so if you haven’t seen it he says it will be re-released to theaters (for Oscar season) on January 26. It reminds me of viewing The Sixth Sense for the second time and watching for all the instances of the color red to appear.
