Retro Thing: A New Super 8 Movie Camera!?

This is a fascinating development for those of us who love to shoot film. A Swedish manufacturer is planning to build and sell a Double Super 8 camera. What is Double Super 8 you ask? It uses 16mm film and captures an 8mm sized negative on only half of the emulsion. You flip the cartridge and expose the other half. It’s processed into normal Super 8 reels. Quite an innovative idea. It has been some 20 years since the last new Super 8 camera was introduced so this is definitely retro. The quality of a 16mm film transport in the camera should lead to a more steady image and increase quality. Most everyone knows the tell-tale sign of a Super 8 image. Shaky image, lots of grain, not a lot of saturation in the colors, low frames rates. This Super 8 look is often desirable but what many don’t know is that with a higher end Super 8 camera and some good film transfer you can produce a Super 8 image that can rival 16mm. If this camera comes to be (and rental houses invest in it) then it could be a nice alternative to some uses of 16mm. I say if because the manufacturer is asking for 25 deposits to be put down before building the camera. There’s no mention of the cam (as of 2/6) on the Ikonoskop website but if you are interested then send an email to info [at] ikonoskop.com with Early adopter for the A-Cam DS8 in the subject line. Oh, and shoot film!
