The mother of all keyboards
By S Simmons. Filed in Editing |Have you heard of the Optimus Maximus? The 144 key keyboard that uses tiny little OLED displays in each key to change the layout of the keyboard depending on the application? By now most everyone has heard of this concept from the design studio Art. Lebedev Studio. Today Engadget posted a number of official press shots and the keyboard still looks amazing. If you haven’t follow the history of this piece of vapor hardware, talk began a couple of years ago and the keyboard has since been a thing of legend going from the price of a cell phone to near $1,500 and from colored keys to black and white and back to color again. Engadget has covered the item quite extensively and a search in their archives will take one on a history through the non-development. As a video editor I love the idea of this keyboard. From Avid, to Photoshop, to Final Cut Pro, to Motion. With all of my key customizations in both Avid and FCP such a change would be nice from my beat up old white keyboard with worn Avid stickers. But then there is the cost. Even $1,000 for a keyboard seems quite insane. And I’m sure the repair cost of one of the keys wouldn’t be cheap either. But you can always go with the Optimus mini three keyboard for $160. Maybe map IN point, OUT point, RETURN…
