Thinking About Interface
By S Simmons. Filed in Editing |There a great post over at Capria.tv where Frank talks a bit about interface, current NLE interfaces and the shape of what might be the interface of the future. The iPhone’s multi-touch interface and Microsoft’s Surface are both intriguing possibilities for an editing interface. Years ago I read an article about the editing of the Van Halen video for “Without You.” You remember that one… it was the only single they had with lead singer Gary Cherone. The video was famous for one of the first uses of the “bullet-time” Matrix effect. They article I read talked about how the editor used a full-screen graphics tablet, not unlike the Wacom Cintiq:
I’ve scoured the Internet and can’t find a link. Probably because it was written before the prominence of the Internet but it really seemed like an intriguing possibility to sit back with the tablet in your lap and do all the work via pen. Of course a lot of machines are based on a pen and tablet workflow, Avid D|S, Quante eQ, and anyone could edit on their NLE with a graphics tablet replacing the mouse. The main obstacle for something like the Cintiq?
Price. It is like buying another monitor after all…
