Component HDMI comparison
By S Simmons. Filed in Editing |It’s not very often that you get to see some high defintion footage of a side-by-side comparison of component and HDMI footage. Well head on over to gametrailers.com’s HD comparison and see just that, some of it even on split screen. What they were doing is looking at the output of the Sony Playstation 3 on a game called Drake’s Fortune. The conclusion: they both look pretty good. This reminds me of a split-screen I did years ago comparing an Avid output at what was then the highest resolution of AVR 77, which was basically 2:1 compression with that of an uncompressed linear online. We took identical scenes and did the split screen. The conclusion: you really couldn’t tell a difference. If you looked real hard on a good monitor you could see it in some wide shots of trees and faster motion but for the most part the difference wasn’t too noticeable. Just like the above linked comparison isn’t that noticeable either. It’s fun to look at though.

That comparison is difficult to make out due to the high compression. I own an HDMI-to-HDI convertor and a 1080P HD card that can capture Component and/or HD-SDI or HDMI.
I’ve done my tests.. Component isn’t even as sharp (luma) as HDV!! Sad.
Convergent Design has a test that is very true to the results I’ve seen when i’ve compared component captures to HDMI captures.. HDMI was clearly better. Try linking to this source too!

Good links John. Thanks for those. I was looking at the gametrailer QT and while it says it’s h.264 in the title the codec is Sorensen 3 so I think they might not know what they are doing!
