Mike Jones Digital Basin : Weblog

Here’s some good Sunday morning reading for you if you are so inclined:

Mike Jones Digital Basin: I love the look of VIDEO.

That statement isn’t heard near as much as talk of loving and trying to gain the elusive “film-look” when not shooting on film. Mike doesn’t need or want the film look. In fact he likes quite the opposite. Here’s one paragraph that caught my eye:

At the risk of public lynching from the film purists I’d argue that in the digital age, film as a medium is a distinctly anti-creative format. By its very nature shooting on film limits, restricts or cuts off the filmmaker from a host options creative options that would otherwise be open to them. Celluloid is not a blank canvas, not an open slate onto which to paint with all the available colours. Digital, by its technical make up, a blank and unformed ball of clay that can be shaped into any conceivable form.

After reading the article I can say that maybe he is right! We’ve had years and years of format after format of video and we still try to get the film-look more and more. The Panasonic DVX-100 probably did more to advance the film-look than any piece of software ever did. Now we’ve moved past video with something like the RED camera and still … looks like film! But dammit, I love that film look as well. That film looks says the movies. I think I summed up my feelings in Mike’s comments:

Comments:
Wow … interesting essay. As one who equally loves both film and video I can’t say I entirely agree or disagree! Half of me says ‘hell yeah’ half of me says ‘f*** no!.’ I guess that’s the sign of a good topic of discussion huh?

  1. Comment by Rob:

Even as a kid I remember thinking to myself durring a strobie fast pan, “That looks bad.” It pulled me right out of the story. Now when I hear all this fuss about “film-look” I cringe. I long for fully digita cinema. No more gate weave; reduced strobing on fast pans, ect. You know the drill. I will not miss the film look.
