fxguide tv posts episodes on RED
By S Simmons. Filed in Editing |The folks over at fxguide (a great resource for info, tips and tricks on visual effects) have just posted the second of two fxguide tv episodes on posting the RED camera. The two episodes give a nice overview of the RED camera, how it differs from other cameras in the way it shoots footage and a number of options for posting RED projects. They don’t go into extreme detail but rather touch on a lot of different options as it would be possible to do a whole episode on each of the individual options if they wanted to!
I did take issue with one thing. In the number 4 option of red offline in FCP + XML back to Red Cine > DPX , they say it is simple as an XML export from Final Cut Pro and that is what you take into RedCine. That is illustrated below in a frame grab from the episode.
That FCP XML then “conforms effectively the clips inside RedCine” and allows DPX output of just the parts of the clip you want. Unless they have some magic tool that I’m not aware exists (and I don’t think a lot of other people are aware of its existence either) and wasn’t mentioned in the episode, that Final Cut Pro XML can’t be imported into RedCine as it is a different “flavor” of XML than what RedCine can conform with. The process above needs something in the step to convert that FCP XML into a RedCine XML. This is a HUGE bump in the workflow that I have talked about before. There are tools out there trying to jump this hurdle, Crimson Workflow first and foremost but it’s just not as easy with this particular workflow as what the fxguide episode would have you believe. I tried to find a place to comment on the episode and ask this very question but didn’t see one. Maybe the good folks at fxguide can comment below if they’ve got something figured out that I haven’t.
They do mention that RedCine won’t produce a full edit with dissolves and proper ordering and the DPX ouput will need eye matching for the final finishing. All true. These are still great resources so if you need to know more about RED (and who doesn’t) then check them out:

You’re right it is not that simple to go xml to red cine and in the full version of this class – lifted from fxphd our sister site, we went through step by step on doing that. In the cut down version I guess we cut too much and should have a disclaimer on that step.
Thanks for posting
