Ben hates Soundtrack Pro

Editblog reader Ben De Rydt has written an article called Will Someone Please Kill Soundtrack Pro? A title like that leaves no question as to what Ben thinks of the application. I don’t use Soundtrack Pro a who lot and when I do use it I generally use it for clean-up of an audio file or very simple mixes. One feature that was great in theory was Soundtrack Pro’s new ability to track changes in an edit and conform those changed in your mix. This feature doesn’t seem to work well for Ben:

This time, I did nothing in Final Cut Pro but sending the result immediately back to Soundtrack Pro. You might have guessed: I had to approve all 200 clips on tracks 1-4 again.

Truth be told I don’t pay a lot of attention to Soundtrack Pro so I kind of liked reading this rant just to see what another user’s experience has been. Anyone else have anything to add about their experiences with STP?

Soundtrack Pro 1 sucked indeed. Soundtrack Pro 2 is wonderful.

Sounds like user error to me!!!

Audioappsz are not made for video people. Maybee you could try some tutorials :P

Works well for quick fixing a single audio file, or putting together a real brief multi track session. For being an audio app it runs realll slow and I have more crashes/stability problems with Soundtrack than any other Apple app. Comes with a good sound library though. More often than not I’ll just use Soundtrack to browse the library and then just import the files directly into FCP.

STPro has always been a big buggy/janky when using the “Send To” linkage capabilities between it and FCP. I nearly always export out self-contained AIFFs from FCP and then open them in STPro, doing any re-importing or relinking back into FCP manually. In the end it’s faster (for what I do). It’s a fine program for certain tasks, and serves my needs well. Of course I’m not an audio engineer either, nor do my mixes tend to be very complex…

STP 3 – what a nightmare! never had this problem before! but using STP for this edit was a mistake. STP 3 actually introduces noise, holes and level issues when none exist in the rushes. Mixing down makes it worse. Exporting makes it worse. Never again will this product be used in this house!
