Linkage: October 08
By S Simmons. Filed in Blogs and links, Editing, Internet resources, from the net, linkage |The Editblog is offline for a week or so to have a vacation! In the meantime here’s some links we’ve been clicking for the past month:
http://www.deakinsonline.com/forum2/index.php – Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins has a forum where he actually moderates and answers questions. There is no better internet resource than this!
http://darrenaronofsky.blogspot.com/ – The director of Pi, Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler has a blog too.
Loader – Loader is a new app from Digital Heaven that automates importing and organizing of media into Final Cut Pro. Shane Ross has a great little write-up about the new apo.
http://fcp.tribe.net/ – A place to swap tips and tricks and other stuff.
ImageFlow updated to 1.5 – If you use CoreMelt’s great ImageFlow plug-in then grab the free update to 1.5. Here’s a demo movie of the new version.
CRAMCompressor is a group of presets for Apple Compressor. Presets include RED settings and Vimeo. Looks interesting.
All About Video Fields – The Lurker’s Guide to Video has a long and in-depth article about video fields. A necessary evil if you produce broadcast tv.
http://www.avid.com/red/ – If you haven’t heard Avid has devoted a link to editing RED with Avid.
Super Fast 4TB RAID for Under $2k – John Flowers details how to build a fast and cheap RAID. Great article!
http://vectormagic.com/ – Convert bitmap images to vector images with a few mouse clicks.
Film Calculator: This iPhone app is “a multi-purpose tool for filmmakers to aid in common tasks of film conversion and counting in pre-production, production and post-production.” But don’t be fooled by that description because it isn’t a timecode calculator!!
If I Ran Apple’s Pro Apps Division: Yep, that’s my article speculating about what’s going on and what needs to happen with Apple’s Pro Apps.
Pocket Clapper: Yet another iPhone camera slate app. These might become as common as tip calculators! They keep making these things and still there’s no timecode calculator!
Fear of the Black Hole: This is a great post about watching premature rough edits and the stupidity that often goes along with it. You can’t read this and not click over and enjoy a listen to the Rough Cut Lady song or the Impossible Promo Approval Guy.
Back up VisualHub: Visual Hub is gone. If you use it then back it up. The source code has been posted so let’s hope someone continues development of this great little tool.
State Film Incentives Cause Jitters: Apparently with the economy in the tank taxpayers are getting tired of funding film production.
Idea: Using an iPhone as a WiFi ‘viewfinder’ – Editing Organized has another great idea for the iPhone.
And a few off topic:
http://iwantabetterchoice.com/ – Democans & Republicrats unite! Or more likely look at what a choice we don’t have.
http://glassbooth.org/ – After checking out the above link, if you still don’t know who to vote for then glassbooth.org has a Q&A that just might help. I was surprised to see I was about 64 McCain – 60 Obama… and 68 Cynthia McKinney… uggh.
Metallica “Death Magnetic” sounds better in Guitar Hero: Is Metallica’s new album overly compressed and crappy sounding? Read all about the debate.
Byline 2.0 – If you have an iPhone and your Google Reader to read your RSS feeds then this iPhone app is a must have.

1) I just downloaded byline off the back of this post…. and I don’t know how I lived without it. Excellent rec, expensive relative to many others but worth it given the other RSS apps out there.
2) Roger Deakins = thoroughly excellent bloke. He came to the NFTS a few months ago (he graduated from here many years ago), and was more than happy to talk to everyone who had questions. Brilliant anecdotes, inspired decisions in lighting, and the current cinematography students who he got to spend even more time with now consider him a god amongst men. So it’s really an absolutely excellent resource there.
3) Have a good break!
