I worry that RED is fracturing their product range a little too much with all those many different models, it creates confusion. Also, the Scarlet’s form factor now is nowhere near as accessible to the ‘soccer moms’ anymore. That said, at $3k, it’s perceivable that I might actually be able to get a Scarlet now..

I would love to capture at 28K for future-proofing but the maximum anyone is going to release at would be 10K for IMAX. The problem is, RED are moving so quickly that they’ve now obligated themselves to create the equipment for displaying such images, because there’s no way any other manufacturer could keep up. It seems like RED themselves cannot even keep up. Case in point – the RED Ray drive is coming out next year but now only two of their cameras support its maximum resolution of 4K without needing to be downsized.

Although of course 4K is more than adequate (and was regarded as revolutionary as late as yesterday). It is very exciting though because it means that the studios and the little guys are much closer to being on a level playing field.
