If you havne’t heard … the cost of the 2009 Editors Retreat has been reduced. From the Editors Retreat email:

With respect to the current economic times and in response to your requests, we are pleased to announce a price reduction for 2009 Editors Retreat. By shortening the length of the Retreat by one day, we’ve managed to cut the price from $3,150 to $2,300 without losing any of our key sessions.

The Retreat now includes:

4 days and 3 nights of sessions and activities
All-inclusive resort stay
All this for only $2,300!

And, a package of give-aways for each attendee worth $2,400 to include:

A Full Pass to the 2009 NAB Post-Production World Conference in Las Vegas! (Valued at approx. $700)
An Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium! (Valued at $1700)
With all of the give-aways and savings you actually receive more than the price of the retreat!

That’s not a bad deal with Adobe CS4 suite thrown in! Submit your registration by December 10 with a 30% down payment. I think this would be a great event to attend but it’s a shame that it is so soon after the Christmas season and not far from NAB. I really want to make it one of these years. If you have been before please comment below and let us know how it is.

I’ve attended the previous two retreats and I have found them invaluable. You get to have face-to-face creative/technical discussions with people who really know what they’re talking about with whom you share common experiences (i.e. the editing war room).

So many of us work in small shops where we’ve got no one to share with, bounce ideas off or look to for technical help. And I’m sure few of us have family and friends who have even to foggiest idea what we really do in that dark and cold room where we spend so much of our day. This is the place where everyone gets it.

The price drop is a great help too – I hope folks can take advantage of this opportunity (as I plan to do).

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE EDITOR’S RETREAT! I went last year and paid for it on my own. It was the best investment I made. It was an unbelievable experience and worth every penny.

I met a group of editors who represented the best of the best from all over the world and became life-long friends with many of them. We have also shared valuable information over the private Editor’s Retreat List-Serv. I have even gotten top-pay editing work from my contacts from the retreat.

In addition to cutting-edge knowledge presented in their workshops, I also met and had a chance to become friendly with the corporate honchos from Apple, Avid and Adobe which has proved invaluable over time.

Anyone can propose a “Peer Presentation” and get a big discount. I presented a “Peer Presentation” to the group about my experience cutting 26 HD cameras for Paul McCartney’s concert film for one hour and they knocked off a big chunk of the fee. But, it did not stop there!!!

After the event, I was approached to present this multi-cam workshop at NAB which I did. (see Scott’s entry on this blog) …This led to a “10-city tour” presenting at user-groups and trade shows….next came a book deal! I am not kidding!!!

I got a publishing deal with Focal Press to do a book called “Mastering Multi Cam”. I am working on it now.

Plus: They gave me the full Adobe Production Bundle CS3 and Automatic Duck software which EQUALED the price of admission.

Oh yeah, did I mention you get to hang out at the beach in Mexico and party hearty?

Need I say more? SEE YOU THERE :)

I’ve attended this even for several years… it is the one place I can go to learn and recharge. The community aspects are great. The price reduction makes it essentially free as you get a full pass to all the Post training at NAB and a full version of Creative Suite 4. Its a great deal and well worth going.

  4. Comment by Non-FMC Affiliate:

Really, It would be fair to have someone respond that doesn’t have a vested interest in FMC training or their events/presentations department.

An all inclusive 5 day 5 star package to Mexico costs between 600 to 1000 dollars at most, and any software you receive while there costs the event nothing. So the price really IS very steep and I would gauge the event makes 1300-1000 dollars per head.

Keep that in mind and that you are being taken advantage of. As for the one to one face time, you’ll hear the same presentations and ideas online and/or any NAB event if you choose to spend your money on that sort of thing.

  5. Comment by Mitch Jacobson:

Just for the record: I am not affiliated with FMC at all and I don’t think Chip is either, so 2 out of three comments are not affiliated. And I stand by my post. I am an editor who went to these retreats as an attendee and I paid for them with my hard earned dollars. The experience was great, the people are awesome and the opportunities are real. As for the value, you get all the classes at NAB free as a retreat member on top of it….and is worth another thousand bucks.

So “Mr. Non-FMC Affilliate” no one is being taken advantage of…just the opposite: A GREAT VALUE and GREAT EXPERIENCE. And, furthermore why are you hiding your name on this professional forum?

    Good comment Mitch, thanks.

Did you make it to the 2009 Editor’s Retreat? How was it?
