Letterman gets a date wrong
By S Simmons. Filed in from the net, pop culture, television |I had the tv on Letterman the other night and he was pimping the premiere of the new Survivor series. He apparently got the date wrong as I heard a really bad audio dub go by in the background. I rewound and yep, it was bad. If you’ve ever been to a Letterman taping you know they like to do the show live to tape and not go back and edit if at all possible. This was obviously the quickest fix but man is it bad. Just listen for the word “eleventh.”

I am pretty sure Letterman is the kind of person who doesn’t care and probably would get a kick out of another person subbing in his line for this. I’ve heard these kinds of things on his show before and they always sound like this. Funny is funny…

Maybe … but to a lot of people it just looks like they didn’t do their research.

This was very clearly a joke. Letterman has always loved to make fun of the “behind the curtain” machinations that go on in a broadcast TV production. Instead of trying to pull off a “professional” overdub, it’s way funnier to call attention to the mistake by performing such a bad audio edit. If you wanted “Late Night” back in his NBC days, he would do this overdub joke all the time.
This also reminds me of the time that he actually went upstairs to the machine room, and edited out a huge chunk of the show, live on camera *while* it was still being recorded. If NBC/Universal werent such jerkwads, I would have been able to link to the clip of this bit. It was definitely a kick to see him edit the show live on a set of 1″-C decks!
