I think the idea of a monthly backup reminder is a good start. But at some point, the easiest approach to backup is to make it an automated process that you don’t have to think about at all. There are numerous solutions out there and I don’t want to favor one over the other, but I’d recommend people look into the options. For me, I use a Windows Home Server. It handles daily backups of all PCs in our house without my having to think. I’m using your monthly reminder only for remembering to swap my offsite storage disks. And ultimately I’d like to make that a “set it and forget it” function using some cloud backup like Carbonite, Mozy, etc.

In summary, backup, backup, backup!
