Linkage NAB edition – April 2011

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

It was a big NAB show last week with lots of people attending and a lot of products announced. This is a short linkage edition but with the NAB show there’s a lot of to kill time with. Here are some links from around the web.

FreshDV has some of the best coverage around the web. They did a ton of videos on everything from production to post so you can kill a lot of time watching their coverage.

Pro Video Coalition has its own dedicated NAB 2011 page with stories on many different NAB related topics. I posted a few iPhone videos over at the Editblog on PVC.

Of course we all know that Apple gave us a sneak preview of Final Cut Pro X and there’s tons of discussion of what we saw … of course. I posted my own piece about the demoed features as I saw them go by. All the usual suspects have chimed in: Larry Jordan, Walter Biscardi, Philip Hodgetts. Mike Jones says that FCP X is really not so new. I don’t think Digital Rebellion was there but they have comments from a developer pov. Here’s another piece that has what looks to be the best video captured that night.

fxguide has their NAB 2011 Wrap Up.

Digital Production Buzz had coverage every day of the show.

Here’s a report from an After Effects pov.

Studio Daily has a bunch of NAB videos. Post Magazine has their own NAB coverage as well.

Vimeo was at NAB too.

SuperMeet: 1 week from today (who knows what will be there!)

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

We are just a week away from the NAB 2011 SuperMeet. Have you gotten your tickets yet? We all know that there’s (supposed to be) the raffle grand prize of a $30,000 DaVinci Resolve system but there’s other great prizes (maybe) like an AJA Io Express, an nVidia Quadro 4000 for Mac, lots of Blackmagic hardware and way more software than you can imagine.

The presentations will may be great (possibly) including director Kevin Smith who has created quite a stir recently with his new film Red State. He’s apparently an Avid user! At least that’s what HAS BEEN THE PROMOTED AGENDA THUS FAR. The agenda had been posted and it looks like there’s something for everyone from Avid, to Autodesk to color grading to DSLRs (can there be anything today without DSLRs!!??). Here’s the specs:

  • Where? - Bally’s Hotel Event Center – on the Las Vegas Strip.
3645 Las Vegas Blvd South, Las Vegas Nevada, 89109
  • When? – Tuesday, April 12, 2011 (Doors open 4:30PM for SuperMeet Digital Showcase featuring 35 vendors and PLENTY OF NETWORKING)
  • How Much? $15.00 per person plus ticket fee. $10.00 for Students with valid ID plus ticket fee. $20.00 at the door
Ticket will include 2 raffle tickets.
  • Any raffle prizes? Of course. $2.00 per ticket or 3 for $5.00
  • Who should attend? – Everyone who wants to learn more about Final Cut Studio, HDSLR and digital filmmaking and meet others who may know more than you do.
  • Food and Drink? – Food (free) and Cash Bars will be available.

So I wrote this post up on Sunday with the intention to post it on Tuesday, one week before. But rumor has run rampant today that Apple has bought out the entire event and is planning a big surprise. If you notice the SuperMeet website as of 3:00 central on Tuesday there is no second half agenda as of yet and all the non-Apple sponsors are still listed. But word has it that the presenting sponsors were told that they wouldn’t be able to present on-stage but would still be able to attend as well as leave their signage up for the event. Who knows what the truth is at this point but I doubt there would be as many strong rumors coming from quite a few sources if something wasn’t going on.

While it would be a most interesting SuperMeet if Apple chose to launch FCPx there at the event (and the Final Cut User Group network would be deserving of such an event that’s for sure) it really seems like a rather mean thing to do if all these sponsors and presenters are dumped a week before the event. And a good question that has been asked on the ‘net is what happens to the sponsor raffle prizes if SuperMeet is “bought out” by Apple?  I think there’s quite a few folks that are eyeing the DaVinci Resolve panel as one of the main reasons to attend. Stay tuned as this drama unfolds!

Have you signed up for the MediaMotion Ball?

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

Are you free next Monday evening (April 11) during your visit to NAB? If so then consider attending the MediaMotion Ball. This is an event that I had heard about for years (this is the 14th year) but attended last year for the first time. It was a really great networking opportunity but I felt I had to head out too early to attend the ALL-IN Film charity poker event (itself quite an enjoyable time). I think trying to hit both in one night was too much so this year I’m going stick with the MediaMotion Ball. According to the MM Ball website the crowd consists of “attendees from various email groups and online forums. The IMUG and After Effects email lists form the basis of the MediaMotion Ball.” But there will also be a lot of familiar faces from user groups, online forums and Twitter lists that will be there as well. Being a post-production guy it feels like the MM Ball is a bit more post-entric while the ALL-IN poker event is a bit more DSLR oriented. This is no small event as there’s a lot of people involved in putting it together. If it’s been around for 14 years then they must be doing something right!

The cost of the MM Ball is $35 in advance and $45 at the door, that is if there are any door tickets left. It begins on Monday, April 11, 5:30pm in the Golden Room at the Sahara Hotel. That price includes food and an entry into the prize drawing. Food is served at 7 pm and we all know we need food at the end of a day on the show floor. Like most NAB events there’s some great sponsors and great prizes that will be given away. I think what’s most important to take away from the MM Ball is that it presents some time away from the hustle and bustle of the exhibit show floor to actually put names with faces and have a meaningful conversation. Grab your own tickets (and you can even have a look here and see who’s signed up already) and we’ll see you at the 2011 MediaMotion Ball.
